I have had a Compaq nx9010 in my attic for 7 years.. I even had to let it reach room temperature because it was so cold it was forming condensation!

So as evidence of how tight HP are the 250mb or RAM was total rubbish, but still had a "replace with official HP RAM" sticker on it.. I ignored this advice and bought a massive 1mb of RAM online and decided to give Peppermint 4 a go. (Lubuntu 13.10 really struggled with 250mb).

With a RAM upgrade this thing is working pretty well.. plays films nicely in mp4, but streaming from iplayer / youtube is a bit laggy.

Enabling 32bit transfers on bios sorted out most errors messages but I'm still getting:

"Scanning for Btrfs filesystems
^[[M[ 20.992086] AC'97 1 access is not valid [0xffffffff], removing mixer.
[ 20.992326] ali mixer 1 creating error]

Which I would appreciate feedback on.
Is it a sound problem because of the old dialup modem onboard?
I considered opening her up and trying to remove it.

Yoi can get rid of the btrfs message (as long as you're not using the btrfs file system) by uninstalling
Code:
btrfs-tools

The AC97 issue may be a bit trickier .. YES, it's highly likely being caused by a winmodem.

Can you disable it in the BIOS ?

I have had a look in the BIOS and there isn't an obvious way of doing it.
I think the best way would be to physically remove it, but it involves fully dismantling the laptop, and I haven't found a diagram which tells me if it is built in or a removable component.

It is a shame because I think the startup would be much quicker without the error. I have sound, so it's not a big deal.
I have tried messing with the alsamixer settings too, but no dice.

Are there any clues in
Code:
gedit /var/log/dmesg

?

If you're unsure, post the contents of that file to:
http://peppermint.pastebin.com

then post a link to your pastebin back here.

Seriously.. how do they get away with peddling this crap to business year after year?
Pushing 40 it makes me weep to think of the wasted years farting about on XP.
& I swear those cheeky sods have deliberately put XP into "constant slow update mode" to try and get me to upgrade to Windows 8.

XP slowed massively at service pack 3, which just happened to be when Vista was released.

Read into that what you will .. but I know what it makes me think ;)

As an environmentally minded person it makes me think the following:

The fundamental driver of the Microsoft business model is the notion of "progress" which is maintained by:
1. New product design.
2. Fresh installs of their operating systems which work well (initially).

I would say that for many consumers the product design, e.g. the actual tower, form of laptop or the way the all-in-one looks is more important than the specs. (Mac users won't like this, but they definitely fall into this category too, the average mac has pretty OK specs and a nice screen and that's about it).

My recent experience of using Peppermint (and Lubuntu on my old tower) has been that the actual fun "new" experience of a fresh install on these machines means I enjoy it just as much as getting a new machine, albeit my tower has a hole chopped in the front with a hacksaw to allow me to fit the spare DVD drive I had lying around and the the NX9010 is MASSIVE and has no battery anymore.

I would have been shorter and more brutal with...

The fundamental driver of the Microsoft business model is .. to squeeze as much money out of you as possible, ALL other design aspects (such as security, etc.) are inconsequential unless they're geared towards goal number one

[EDIT]

"Do the right thing", or "build the best OS you can", doesn't come into it.

As for Apple, well nowadays they're just a logo marketing department with small design, and tech departments attached as afterthoughts.
