could be a kernel issue. I have an Ivy bridge i3 with debian (LMDE), and I had a similar "bad" visual effects. I upgraded to kernel 3.9.1 and all was solved. Ivy bridge igp apparently is not well suported by "old" versions of linux kernel.

Did upgrade kernel to 3.9.1 but no changes.

Does it do this from a Peppermint 3 LiveCD/LiveUSB ?

If so, does it do it from a Peppermint 4 LiveCD/LiveUSB ?

Sorry, should have told that, no probs with 4, but LinuxMint 13 gives the same problem, LXDE is suspicious. No prob with XCFE too.

OK, that's just weird .. I'd understand Mint13 giving the same problem as they're both based on Ubuntu 12.04 and will be on the 3.2 kernel series

But Xfce solving the problem .. that's just odd

The only thing I can thing of that Xfce has that LXDE doesn't is a compositor (Peppermint 4 also now has a compositor)

Do you want to try installing Compton (compositor) in Peppermint 3 .. I wrote a tutorial for this on my other forum somewhere .. I can go find it if you wish.

The only other thing that PM4 has is obviously a later kernel .. but If it works in PM3 with Xfce, I'd try compositing first as it's easily removed if it makes no difference.

Let's try Compton and see if it helps

Open a terminal and run:
Code:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:richardgv/compton

then
Code:
sudo apt-get update

then
Code:
sudo apt-get install compton

then
Code:
sudo gedit /etc/xdg/lxsession/Peppermint/autostart

and when a file opens with a few lines already in it .. add a single NEW line at the bottom that reads:-

@compton -cC

SAVE the file .. then log off/on again (or reboot)

Any difference ?

=====================================================

[EDIT]

Did you mean Xubuntu 12.04, or 13.04 ?

Yep, a little bit.... I saw a shadow of the windows, but the main problem remains. Tried the new LXLE 12.04.3, no probs.

I am still thinking of an Openbox bug. When I open Openbox manager sometimes all is fixed after changing themes, sometimes all crashes with a hard freez.

I thought LXLE used LXDE/Openbox too ?

does the Peppermint 3 LiveCD/LiveUSB give the same issue ?

Are you fully updated ?

What kernel is LXLE using, as compared to your current one

How does the version of:
Code:
Xorg -version

compare to LXLE's ?

and the versions of:
Code:
dkpg -l | grep xserver-xorg-video-intel
