Must be an obvious answer somewhere.

I thought I would give the ICE software a whirl today and I'm finding it very good apart from downloading the web site icon.
When I add a web site you have the option to download the website ICON does this actually work?
I've tried it on a couple of sites that have an ICON but nothing seems to happen.

I even removed the Seesmic Web link from within ICE then added it again, that wouldn't download the icon either, although I know it has one as it was there before I removed the link.
I'm sure it's just me doing something wrong!

Any help with this would be great, where are all the icons actually stored, when downloaded?

Cheers

Ian

Kendall may have to look into this, as far as exactly how the icon is pulled into his application. I think this has been discussed here briefly before. If you had examples of a couple of sites that did work (lxer.com) and a couple that did not (disinfo.com), that may help him greatly. It might be the Ice tool, or it could be how the site icon is coded on the page.

Anyway, until this is sorted, you can change the icon manually.

The file to edit for changing the icon is located here (if browsing with File Manager, show hidden files):
~/.local/share/applications/

The icons for ICE-created apps are stored here:
~/.local/share/ice/

Put icon you want to use in the icon directory and edit the file, using a text editor, to reference that icon.
The line you want to edit begins with Icon=

Thanks very much.

Just by altering the icon manually will be great.
I need to find out how I can actually download the icon now.
Makes me realise just how much I don't know......loads
It's all a learning curve :)

I actually tried peppermint on my works laptop which is a notepad, any idea what I need to install to get the touch screen to work.
I've tested Ubuntu which works fine including the touch screen.

Thanks for all the help.

Cheers

Ian

You could just grab the favicon for the website (I'm assuming that's how ice works). More often than not it's in the root directory of a website so e.g. duckduckgo.com/favicon.ico will get it, for example.

I dunno about touchscreens I'm afraid. But
Code:
apt-cache search touchscreen
turned up a few things. If you'd rather a GUI then just open synaptic or software installer from the system menu and search for touchscreen.

Thanks for the tips on getting the website icon, worked a treat!

Not tried the Touch screen yet as I don't really need it, may look into that in the future.
For now all seems to be working fantastic apart from when I break something

Thanks for all the help.

Cheers

Ian

Not when you think you're formatting a USB stick but actually format the hard drive!!!!!

That's what I did when distro hoping after finding out about Linux January last year.
I had a dual boot with Windows Vista and hadn't backed up anything.

Took a lot to recover everything but I did manage it, formatted hard drive in error(it was very early and I hadn't slept so easy mistake to make...my excuse anyway) at 06.00am managed to boot back into Windows Vista at about 22.00 the following night after a whole day of pulling my hair out!
Calculating and readjusting the sector size I can just about remember as being very worring as that was a do or die moment.

Crikey January 16&17th 2011!!! didn't realise it was that long ago now.

Link for anybody who wishes to read my saga:-

Ubuntu forum

Very informative and to be fair I did learn alot.....although forgotten most of it now as I didn't really do much after that cock up!

Cheers

Ian
