Desirability Necessary for running Java apps in the browser or locally, of course

Open the "Software Sources" application in the Preferences part of the main menu, and click the second tab that says "Other Software". There should be a couple of unchecked boxes at the top for archive.canonical.com, check those and close the application. It'll prompt you to reload, do so.

Open the "Software Manager" and search for "sun-java6", there you'll find the "sun-java6-jre" package and the "sun-java6-plugin" package. Install these and you should be good to go.
