I've more than once held that antivirus programs are worse than viruses in themselves, insofar as they can be nigh-on impossible to remove cleanly, have overhead greater to or equal than viruses themselves, and have been known to do things without users' permissions.

My tongue's only partially in my cheek on this. FWIW clamav, on Linux or Windows, is a good choice as it does not, in fact, qualify as a virus in these ways itself, if a virus scanner is considered essential.

It still amazes me that a M$ box, running one or more AVs and one or more Spyware apps, that are all up to date, can still be so easily infected and rendered useless. Now, how's that work? HeeHeeHeeeeeeeeeee!!!

I just converted one of my parents friends to Peppermint OS from windows. She would always come to me with problems on her laptop. Usually it's from a virus and malware. It's gotten so bad that her computer is mostly useless, like it was tonight. I convinced her to use Peppermint and installed (dual-boot) it and showed her what programs were for what and set up her email and she's ready to go! I think she'll really like it. She was always complaining that it (windows) was sooo slow... Well, with Peppermint, that will no longer be an issue. ;) Yay!

I, personally have been distro hopping for years trying to find the perfect distro. I finally found Peppermint and have fallen in love. No need to distro-hop anymore. :D

I learned when I was running Windows that that can be said for about half the AV programs out there. And all the ones that use pop-ups to sell to naive users (they catch a lot of them).

The good AV programs have to embed themselves deep into Windows, or else it becomes too easy for the malware programmers to shut the defenses down as part of the virus operation. Yes, they are virus like, and that's how it has to be, unfortunately.

I don't know enough about Kaperski to comment on it.

There are pages & Pages about this topic around the Web & on Linux Forums.
I do not use an AV on Linux & there is also Discussion about that topic. I find it would be hard to imposable that you could become infected on Linux , Unless you allowed root access to such maleware.Although it is Not inconceivable for someone to build a Trojan that could bypass & maybe redirect Your Web Browser to a Malware/Spam Site. The chances of such are a lot lower than a Win install. BTW = If you must/do run Win Install = I recommend that you Do not run without a good trusted AV & Firewall. :ugeek:

I'm with Jay, I don't run any AV on Linux but I use this list in win:

AVG free
Lavasoft Adaware
Malware Bytes
Spybot Search & Destroy

And Ccleaner for registry stuff

No where near as easy as Linux.
