No I havent. But tried mint 15 & 16, and also xfce version. Same results.
Ive succesfully installed a linux distro before but cant remember what distro.

I'll keep you updated if there's progress.

Ok good news.
I was able to get hold a nvidia vc.

Boot again thre livedvd, no problem booting, went through the desktop. But this time, no problem with the screen, only system freezes.
Add xforcevesa, nomodeset, acpi=off, vga=771 still the same results.

I think this is something to do with VIA chipset.

Are you SURE this isn't a failiing memory stick ?

Either run mem86+ on your RAM at least a couple of times .. or if you have 2 sticks, remove one and test by booting a Live session, then swap them over and test again.

I don't know, I'm not using this PC anymore.
But when I'm on windows xp, puppy, or livexp, I don't experience any freezing.

I'll check, see if mem is defective.

is it a kernel panic ? .. are the keyboard lights flashing on and off after the freeze ?

is this a desktop of Laptop ? .. can you give us the make/model of either the motherboard of the laptop.

No, kb not flashing.
This is a desktop.
Amd Athlon x2 3200
Asus m2v-tvm, VIA K8m890ce
2gb ddr2-800 ram.

After some googling (ubuntu freeze m2v-tvm) it seems this was a known problem with the m2v-tvm motherboard (and a few other ASUS boards from the same period).

Support seems to have been broken after Ubuntu 8.04, and ASUS were saying they were not going to fix the BIOS even back then.

So I'm afraid you're probably stuck :(

That's ok, thanks did your time.
I was able to install it using ubuntu alternate installer.
But same problem. I wonder why kernel puppy linux its using. It's working w/o any problem! :!:
