Post subject:  Help getting Peppermint 4 wifi working on Dell Inspiron 1545

Hello,
I'm trying to get Peppermint 4 up and running on my parent's Windows Vista Dell laptop thingy.
It's an inspiron 1545 model.

After installing PM4 and booting up, I could see that the wifi wouldn't
work, so it looks like some kind of drivers are needed. The issue with this particular issue is that
the port for the LAN cable appears to be damaged, so I have to find another way to install the relevant
driver(s).

Is there any way to get the relevant file(s) to install manually? I'm just visiting my parents
(we live 10,000km away) and want to get this up and running so their exposure to the horrors of Vista is
limited. They are amazed how fast Peppermint looks in comparison already, despite it not yet having
working internet access.

I wasn't sure which info to include for help, so below I have the inxi, lspci,
lsusb, and lspci -vvnn as they were listed as minimal for requesting help.

Hi Blubris

It looks like you have a Broadcom wireless controller which requires a proprietery driver, it would normally be available to download and install under "Additional Drivers" but as you can't connect to the network you can't download the driver, it is possible to install the driver manually (but it's not something I could talk you through) but you would still have to have another means of downloading the driver ie another PC/laptop with an internet connection (which presumably you do if you were able to post this)

The only other alternative I can think of is to purchase a usb adaptor that's compatable with Linux to get you online to download the Broadcom driver

Good luck

Graeme

Not only do you need to the b43 drivers, but you also need the lpphy firmware

Doing this offline will be awkward to say the least .. can you not borrow a USB wireless adapter that might "just work" .. just whilst we install the drivers ?

If not, let me know the output from:
Code:
uname -a

and I'll see about typing up some "offline" instructions.

Unfortunately I don't know anyone who has a usb adapter that I could use. Sorry for causing so much trouble. I'm just trying to help out my parents while we're here over Xmas and new year.

The uname -a shows as follows:

barbrineale@barbrineale-Inspiron-1545 ~ $ uname -a
Linux barbrineale-Inspiron-1545 3.8.0-23-generic #34-Ubuntu SMP Wed May 29 20:22:58 UTC 2013 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

OK, here goes:

On the Peppermint PC, create a folder on the desktop called b43-offline

On a PC with a working internet connection, download these files:-
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+archive/primary/+files/b43-fwcutter_015-14_amd64.deb
and
http://downloads.openwrt.org/sources/broadcom-wl-4.178.10.4.tar.bz2
and copy them into the directory you just created on the Peppermint PC.

On the Peppermint PC, open a terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and run these commands in sequence:
Code:
cd ~/Desktop/b43-installer

then
Code:
sudo dpkg -i b43-fwcutter_015-14_amd64.deb

then
Code:
sudo rm -rf /lib/firmware/b43

then
Code:
sudo mkdir -p /lib/firmware/b43

then
Code:
tar xvjf broadcom-wl-4.178.10.4.tar.bz2

then
Code:
cd ~/Desktop/b43-installer/broadcom-wl-4.178.10.4/linux

then
Code:
sudo b43-fwcutter -w /lib/firmware wl_apsta.o

then
Code:
sudo chmod 755 /lib/firmware/b43

then
Code:
sudo modprobe -r b43

then
Code:
sudo modprobe b43

Did wireless spring to life ?

If it's working .. feel free to save/move/delete the b43offline directory from your desktop

You are a genius.

I followed the steps and the only issue was that no wifi networks showed as available, so I had to manually add the one I wanted to use. I'm just scared to reboot now in case something goes wrong! :D

If the driver isn't loaded at next boot:
Code:
sudo gedit /etc/modules

and add a single NEW line at the bottom that reads

b43

SAVE the file and reboot.

Any kernel modules listed in /etc/modules are automagically loaded at bootup.

I've rebooted a few times and it seems fine. My parents will only really use it for Skype and online browsing and shopping. I installed ufw and updated everything. They're amazed at the speed of it!

Thank you so much for your help!

Happy holidays!
