First thing to try ..

Open the Synaptic Package manager .. it will probably give the same warning, but just dismiss the warning.

then click the "Reload" button.

If that works without error .. CLOSE Synaptic <-- that's important

Then back in the terminal run:
Code:
sudo apt-get update

If no errors, great.

If there are errors, run:
Code:
gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

Post the contents of that file to pastebin:
http://peppermint.pastebin.com
click the submit button .. then poste the URL of your pastebin back here.

Run:
Code:
sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

change the second to last line from

Code:
deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ raring-security restricted multiverse universe main

to
Code:
# deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ raring-security restricted multiverse universe main

SAVE the file.
Run:
Code:
sudo apt-get update

any errors now ?

How are you trying tt add items to docky ? .. dragging and dropping them ? .. where from ?

[EDIT]

You might want to read this topic:
http://linuxforums.org.uk/index.php?topic=11192.0

and in particular the 2 postings starting here:
http://linuxforums.org.uk/index.php?top ... 6#msg88696
that describe how to install a later version of pcmanfm from my personal PPA that seems to fix the docky drag and drop issue.
