I am trying to install PM4 on a Packard Bell Easy Note Model Argo C with a Phoenix BIOS V0.11.

For some reason I cannot boot from CD/DVD, and not from USB. Whatever I choose from the boot select menu, nothing works. The troubles I have look like the troubles described in this Mageia forum topic.

Hence, I tried Peppermint from the CD and from the USB stick I always use to install it. Nothing works.

Only with the CD I do get the Peppermint menu. But after choosing the Live or Install option nothing happens ....

Anybody any ideas?

Thank you in advance,

How old is this Argo C beast ?

How did you create the LiveUSB ?
(and what is it listed as in the boot device selction screen ?)

Have you tried the LiveCD on another system ?

To be honest: it looks like tomb discovery found next to the remains of an Inca chief who died in the Peruvian Andes shortly after the arrival of Franzisco Pizzaro. A friend's son gave it to me asking me to install Peppermint after I ported his parents to Peppermint. It runs Windows XP, it has an Intel Celeron M 410 processor @ 1.46 Ghz and 2 Gb RAM, so an excellent candidate for Peppermint. I believe it to be about 10 years old.

The USB stick I created following your explanation in the Acer Aspire One ZG5 netbook installation guide. I used the USB stick several times to install Peppermint on other laptops. It never fails, even this evening after I was busy with the HP laptop I used it to install Peppermint on an Acer Aspire laptop. The Live CD I use on a regular basis as well. It also never fails.

The troubles I have look like the troubles described in this Mageia forum topic.

I would like to try the suggested options mentioned in the Mageia forum topic,
Code:
nohz=off and noacpi

but I do not know how to get a terminal from the bootscreen and enter the code. Besides that I absolutely don't know what I am actually doing using those options.

Thank you in advance and with kind regards,

Ahh gotcha, so it was originally aquired using the barter system for 3 fresh dodo eggs, 7 Sumatran pobble beads, and a sharp stone.

OK if this is anything to go by:
http://asia.cnet.com/product/easynote-a ... 312285.htm

Then it's running a Celeron "M" processor which probably doesn't support PAE

I take it you're trying to install Peppermint 4 ? .. if so, Peppermint 4 doesn't come with a non-PAE kernel .. Peppermint 3 did though ;)

Yes, it is this model laptop.

You write that PM4 doesn't support PAE; with that you mean Physical Address Extension? Should I, instead, use PM3?

In the meantime I did a little research as well. Via the Mageia forum topic and this Ubuntu page I learned a little bit about boot kernel options.

Among many I tried
Code:
nohz=off

and that one did the trick. The CD boots, but incredibly slow. It takes ages to load, but there was obviously nothing faster in the time of Franzisco Pizzaro.

Now I wonder: can I install PM4 or should I make this command
Code:
nohz=off

permanent during boot before or after installation? Or is PM3 better? (PM3 runs straight out of the box, I just tested.)

I doubt using it because on this page I read that some processors get stuck at a 100% with that setting. Besides that, I just don't know at all what I am doing ... :?

If that kernel boot parameter works then the CPU must support PAE .. so PM4 should be fine.

Add the kernel boot parameter whilst booting from the LiveCD .. install PM4 .. Reboot.

If PM4 won't boot from the HDD after installation .. add the boot parameter to GRUB's kernel boot line .. boot .. make it permanent.

=======================================================

It's not that PM4 doesn't support physical address extensions .. it's that it ONLY supports CPU's that themselves support PAE

ie. .. there is no non-PAE kernel in Peppermint 4
