Until you've created the recovery USB stick, here's the dilemma ..

I get the feeling that setting Legacy Only mode, then reinstalling GRUB may sort this out .. but there's a slight risk it will break Windows leaving you unable to create the recovery disk.

So I think creating the recovery disk is the first priority.

I can't risk it as I use this pc on the road for business. Until this can be sorted out I'm going to wait. Perhaps I can find a faster usb drive and use a persistent install that way as an interim method.

What would a good low cost netbook be that I could install peppermint 4 on beside windows that would work. Maybe Acer? I may try that down the road as I'm not really happy with Lenovo. I'm using an old Acer right now but with the small 8" screen it's too small for business use. I like 11.6 to 12.5" as they are nice and light for travel use. Thanks. Jeff

There's ALWAYS a slight risk of corrupting partitions (and therefore Windows) when manipulating partitions for a dual booter. .. this is not a Linux issue, it's just a fact that equally applies to manipulating partitions in Windows.

So it's ALWAYS a good idea to have created a recovery media first .. just in case.

I can't recommend any particular netbooks .. the only ones I'm 100% sure of are the AA1's I own (sounds like you own one too) and the MSI Wind U130 .. maybe someone else can help ?

If you're happy enough with the Lenovo hardware, I'd stick with it .. just make sure you've created the recovery USB stick before going any further .. it's ALWAYS a good idea to create a recovery media anyway, if your HDD fails at any point requiring a new one, a recovery "partition" isn't going to be much good to you is it ?

We can get Peppermint and Win7 on this machine .. the only problem is you may need to reinstall Windows in Legacy BIOS mode first.

It would be daft to go any further with this until you have a recovery disk/USB stick .. or unless you don't care about loosing Windows.

After a lot of digging I finally got everything to work. The key is to use boot repair if the menu for either booting into Peppermint or windows does not work which is what happened to me. This program is downloaded from the Ubuntu repository when in the terminal mode and then installed. It's still not easy as boot repair tells you to make several changes from the terminal screen and screenS are flashing by in terminal mode which is a bit disconcerting. However, in the end, I had a grub menu which allowed me to boot Peppermint 4 or windows 7 and I did not have to reload windows 7 or anything as severe as that. I've only been using it for about half a day but so far it's work good. I'm sure there are others out there who will want to try this. Use this link for boot repair. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UEFI.
Thanks.

Edit - It is still working ok after several days so I think it's ok. Jeff
