Post subject:  Dual boot / missing installation option

Hello

I am trying to install peppermint on an asus 1001 ha, for various work things i unfortunately need to keep hold of windows on it.

When installing, I only get two options 'erase disk and install peppermint' or 'something else'

I tried something else, and have created a partition with Peppermint on, but the machine still boots straight to Windows.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Adam

Did you create a swap partition? Also, did you happen to look at the bottom of the partitioning box to see where the bootloader was being installed? And, lastly, did you install this from a CD or USB drive?

Sorry for all the questions, but answers to those may help me help you. ;)

I didn't create a swap partition, and i didn't notice where the bootloader was being installed I'm afraid! I've installed from USB.

I think that being a novice I made a mess of manually sorting out the partitions, but the only other option seemed to be to lose windows altogether…

Thanks!

OK, you have 2 options here -

a) Delete all the Linux partitions leaving UNPARTITIONED space on the drive .. then reinstall Peppermint 3
(Peppermint should offer to install "alongside" windows using the free space)

b) If you've correctly installed Peppermint, reinstall the GRUB bootloader to the MBR of the HDD

If you haven't managed to boot Peppermint at all yet .. I'd probably suggest the first option.

Thanks!

I loaded Peppermint from the USB, used gparted to delete all partitions except for windows (4 partitions confusing installer?), and have now reinstalled, with the 'install alongside' appearing as an option

It runs like a dream….

thanks for help!

Happy to hear you got it sorted.

Yes if they were all "primary" partitions .. that's all you can have on a single HDD.

You can have more than 4 partitions .. but only 4 "primary" partitions .. the rest would need to be logical partitions inside an extended partition.

FYI, the Windows boot partition MUST be on a primary partition .. Linux is happy to go anywhere :)

I probably know what happened during your first installation. I've noticed that with Peppermint it tends to try putting the bootloader on the USB drive when you partition manually, even when you're installing to your internal hard drive. You have to manually change it after you set up your partitions (if you do it before, it automatically changes back when it refreshes.) I don't know why it does this, Mint doesn't do this. It's a PITA, especially for people who are new to this.
