I just installed Peppermint 3 on my old Dell 3000 desktop computer and so far love it! Samba set up was a breeze so that's good.

Should I have installed Peppermint 4 instead. Is there much of a difference regarding resources and applications installed?

One thing that is driving me crazy in PCManFM in Peppermint 3 is when I create a bookmark in the sidebar. I am not able to select it. Is this because I am using an older version of PCManfm?

The repositories are different, of course, moving from 12.04 to 13.04 but a major change in P4 is the move from openbox to Xfwm4.
P4 is a good, solid OS. But, then, so is P3. I run both (on separate machines). Were I pressed to choose one or the other I would opt for P4.

The thing is, P5 will be out in a matter of a few weeks (May-June) so if you're happy with P3 and you're all set up there's really no need to switch. Get the iso and run it live and see if which one you prefer.

I used system-config-samba to set up my shares. Took less than a minute. I don't know why this handy app isn't part of more Ubuntu based distros.

It is available for download...
Code:
sudo apt-get install system-config-samba

...or you can use synaptic.

I know it is in the Ubuntu repos. I'm just wondering why more distros don't include is as part of the default apps. It's so easy to use and setup. Love it!!

Time, space, bulk considerations: especially for distros aiming to be "light" and keep the .iso size to a minimum.
You're right, though, that's a splendid package.

Dunno why others don't, but Peppermint doesn't include SAMBA by default (samba is quite heavy on system resources and not everyone would want/need it) so kinda pointless including a configuration tool for it ;)

But I agree, I can't for the life of me understand why distros that do include SAMBA out of the box don't include the GUI configuration tool for it .. maybe it's know to be buggy in certain situations (or possibly out of date) (?)
