If the power manager doesn't work I wonder what would happen if you removed xfce4-power-manager ?

I'll comment it out from
Code:
/etc/xdg/lxsession/Peppermint/autostart
reboot and see what happens. I do use the hibernation feature because that works in its own way. I have the machine set hibernate if the on/off button is pressed. It displays the ask option when I press the on/off button though. It worked once as I expected.

I've tried commenting out the Xfce4 power management from the autostart and I have commented it out in
Code:
/etc/xdg/lxsession/Peppermint
. This made no difference. I then tried:
Code:
sudo apt-get remove --purge xfce-power-management
. The computer hated that idea. I lost control of the desktop and had to use Ctrl+Alt+F2 to drop out of X. From here I shutdown using
Code:
sudo shutdown -P now
On re-boot the power management had gone and I had control. The interface was really sluggish though. The power management is obviously doing something so I've re-installed it. I've reverted everything back to the previous settings and gone back to the drawing board, so to speak. I'll wait and see if the fresh install of the package makes a difference.

What's your output on this?

Code:
cat /etc/xdg/lxsession/Peppermint/autostart

What you're describing, now, is exactly what happens to me when 'xscreensaver' is running in the background.

Turning off the screensaver via the GUI does nothing. I need to disable 'xscreensaver' @ boot, e.g. no 'xscreensaver' autostart.

Here's the requested output:
Code:
andy@andy-AMILO-Li3710 ~ $ cat /etc/xdg/lxsession/Peppermint/autostart
@lxpanel --profile Peppermint
#@xscreensaver -no-splash
@xfce4-power-manager
@pcmanfm --desktop --profile peppermint
@/usr/lib/policykit-1-gnome/polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1
@mintinput1
@xdg-user-dirs-gtk-update
@xbindkeys
andy@andy-AMILO-Li3710 ~ $
As can be seen, the xscreensaver is commented out. I was hoping that the freshly re-installed Xfce4 power manager I did earlier would clear up the issue. Alas, it was not to be :(. The screen is still blanking out after about 10 mins, even though the DPMS is disabled.

It looks like this mystery has been resolved. I had almost become used to the machine behaving like it was haunted :o . Yesterday I did a routine Clonezilla backup. I always have it check the disk and file system before it makes an image. Low and behold, there was a couple of errors in the file system. It ask if I wanted to repair them. I hit "y" and enter and it said everything was fixed. Clonezilla went ahead and did its thing. Rebooted into Peppermint and everything is running great. Memory usage is lower. Guess what? The screen isn't randomly blanking out anymore :D . God knows what the mystery was but Clonezilla seems to have fixed it. :) !!
