I followed the download instructions for Peppermint 4 and did the Md5 check with no problems and then burned to a CD. When I looked at the BIOS Boot Order it shows the CD Drive first, but when I Save and Exit it goes to open Windows as usual. I tried restarting and with the same result. Here's the details I noted:

Boot Priority Order

1. AHCI CD: Slimtype DVD A DS8A5SH (Does it make any difference that it says 'DVD'?)
2. AHCI HDD: Hitachi followed by model Number
3. USB Key: N/A
4. USB CD: N/A
5. USB FDD: N/A
6. USB HDD: N/A
7 PCI BEV: N/A

Watch your screen carefully during the early boot process and look for a "Press any key to boot from CD or DVD" message. It will only be there a few seconds. It sounds like you might be missing it and failing to press "any key " in which case the computer will boot the hard drive. I hope it proves to be that simple for you.

regards
mac

If you mean about pressing a key to get to the BIOS, I managed to do that the first time, which in my case was the F2 key.

I managed to borrow a disc from a friend and check the Boot process and it worked fine. I re-read the 'Download and Install' instructions just in case I couldn't see the wood for the trees. It was as I thought and it still wouldn't work. I re-downloaded the ISO file and still the same. I opened the file in Windows Explorer and it opened with the 'Winzip' interface. Is this right? Does the installation process unzip these files or should I unzip them myself? This is the only thing I could think of.

How are you burning the ISO image onto the CD/DVD ?

And are you using Windows or Linux .. which version ?

My guess is you're just copying the ISO image (as a file) to the CD/DVD .. in which case the CD/DVD will not be bootable, so your PC moves on to the next device in the boot order until it finds one that IS bootable.

If you tell us which OS you're using to burn the LiveCD .. we can provide instructions :)

I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate, never used Linux before. I'm using Nero to burn the ISO image to a CD.

Use ImgBurn to burn the ISO image to disk (CD or DVD)

You can download ImgBurn here:
http://download.imgburn.com/SetupImgBurn_2.5.7.0.exe
(free Windows application)

There's a tutorial for burning an ISO image to CD/DVD with ImgBurn here:
http://neosmart.net/wiki/display/G/Burning+ISO+Images+with+ImgBurn

Hint - On the second picture, where it says
Write Speed: AWS (MAX)
Change it to
Write Speed: X4

I'm very grateful. I have to go and do family things but I'll get on it ASAP; and report back.

Thanks again.

Rushed home to do the burning on ImgBurn as you suggested and it worked a treat. Played about with the live disk and I've just completed the installation; posting this now using Peppermint 4.

Even though this Distro isn't as well known as Ubuntu or Mint, and presumably having less users, you(PCNetSpec) and the Peppermint community have come up trumps. The emphasis on the great 'Community' aspect of Linux and Open Source is very well justified.

I'm ever so grateful and many thanks for all your help.

You're most welcome .. I'm glad to hear it all went well and you're now "one of us" as it were ;)
