There probably wasn't in the kernel itself .. but there was probably an installaable driver available.

just as a matter of interest, what's the output from:
Code:
sudo lshw -C network

OK, sod it .. we'll try to get it working with this kernel

Open a terminal and run:
Code:
wget -O alsa-info.sh http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-info.sh && chmod +x ./alsa-info.sh && ./alsa-info.sh

(that's all one line, so copy/paste it)
When asked if you wwant to upload it, say YES (y)

You will then be presented with a URL to where it was uploaded to .. similar to:
Quote:
Your ALSA information is located at http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=d2144bd3c37d1583c0f59fb14a96d5838e42619f

Can you post that URL.

strange... it didn't send it to a URL...

Code:
Your ALSA information is in /tmp/alsa-info.txt.sGu4iRq2x9

here's a pastebin for alsa-info.txt

http://pastebin.com/Dh0U0SVq

also just realized i could select the original kernel via the startup manager...

rebooted... no sound there either...

Yeh, but I want to know if the headphone socket is working NOW .. ie. if the headphones are active and working but the internal speakers aren't .. or if NIETHER are working.

Also, what happens if you start alsamixer:
Code:
alsamixer

then hit F6 .. then select a different card ?

I have a feeling your laptop is loading the HDMI as the first audio device .. so lets see what happens if we try changing that ..

Open a terminal and run:
Code:
gedit ~/.asoundrc

when a BLANK file opens .. make it read:-
Code:
defaults.ctl.card 1
defaults.pcm.card 1
defaults.timer.card 1

SAVE the file, and close gedit.

Now back in the terminal, run:
Code:
sudo alsa force-reload

(or reboot)

Does sound work now ?

=================

if not, run:
Code:
mv -v ~/.asoundrc ~/asoundrc-delete_me

then reboot .. you'r now back to where you were before making these changes.
