Hi mac thanks for sticking with this
graeme@Latitude-D600 ~ $ /var/log/samba/log/192.168.2.3
bash: /var/log/samba/log/192.168.2.3: No such file or directory
graeme@Latitude-D600 ~ $ graeme@Latitude-D600 ~ $ sudo chmod 755 /var/lib/samba/printers

[sudo] password for graeme:
graeme@Latitude-D600 ~ $
graeme@Latitude-D600 ~ $ sudo chmod 755 /var/lib/samba/printers
graeme@Latitude-D600 ~ $

"To no avail" simply means without success or without the desired result sorry it must be a phrase used only this side of the big pond :)

I would be more than happy to start from scratch if you are it seems this problem is not easy to solve communicating this way if it's solvable at all and it wouldn't be you that looks stupid

/var/log/samba.log.192,xxx,x,x.........I removed that from the post...not fast enough, though, I see. Hang around through the weekend and maybe a samba expert will catch the thread. I'm sending a pm.

regards
mac

All of that remember to me when, few years ago, running Xandros (a former Linux distribution), I was trying to connect my EeePc to any printer, without any success. Then, I read something about HP printers and their Linux friendly regards... I bought my first HP printer this same day and connect it to my EeePc (it was a 2G: remember it?) without any problem.

Since, I get 4 more HP printers, all of them connected to my Linux computers, without any problem.

I had never try again any other brand of printer. HP is not the best printer in town, I'm sure; but it runs very well with my Linux Peppermint computers.

:mrgreen:

Hi Chichille

I don't think my printers are really the problem I feel the problem lies with the way I've set my network up, the way I'm trying to configure the printers or maybe even a problem with Peppermint itself or a combination of all 3, It's quite possible that HP printers would work fine I'm not knowledgeable enough to argue but unfortunately I cant afford the luxury of replacing all my printers, but thanks for your input its much appreciated.

Many Thanks

Graeme

That's the trick, Emegra, I understand that.

But in other concern, today, it is less expensive to buy a printer than to renew the ink cartridge(s).

8-)

stop samba
from your smb.conf file
Code:

[printers]
comment = All Printers
browseable = no
path = /var/spool/samba
printable = yes
guest ok = no
read only = yes
create mask = 0700

change:
browseable = yes
guest ok = yes

uncomment security = user:
Code:
####### Authentication #######

# "security = user" is always a good idea. This will require a Unix account
# in this server for every user accessing the server. See
# /usr/share/doc/samba-doc/htmldocs/Samba3-HOWTO/ServerType.html
# in the samba-doc package for details.
# security = user

restart samba
print

Hi Eric
I tried what you suggested but it still wont work, in an attempt to discover if the problem is with Peppermint I installed Mint LDXE. initially I had same problem, I eventually got the Brother printer that's connected to the Windows PC to work by copying and pasting the path from my Linux PC to the printer properties on the laptop and it worked, the difference in the pathname was only a % symbol positioned between the name spaces eg original path= smb://MSHOME/PAT/Brother20DCP-120C20USB20Printer, Path copied from Linux PC= smb://MSHOME/PAT/Brother%20DCP-120C%20USB%20Printer, I did try that in Peppermint and although it reported no errors and appeared to print it didn't actually print. I still can't connect to my other 2 printers connected to my Linux PC but I can live with that, The Epson reports in localhost 631 "processing sinceSun 01 Jan 2012 18:18:19 GMT "File '/System/Library/ColorSync/Profiles/sRGB Profile.icc' not found " The Samsung reports " held since
Sun 01 Jan 2012 17:41:47 GMT "Tree connect failed (NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED)"

I'm not sure what to do from here but I'm inclined to think I should just stay with MInt even though it seem to run a little slower than Peppermint any advice would be appreciated

Many Thanks

Graeme

That's entirely up to you, nothing wrong with using something that works
