Just on a whim I decided to check the connection speed here at the office. I know speedtest.net isn't the most accurate metric in the world, but I figured it'd be fun for everyone to post what they're getting right now. Again, this is my connection at work, I'll post my home connection sometime this evening.

Well, I pay for 1.5 Mb/s DSL from AT&T, so I guess it's about right. After all, you just about never get quite as fast as they claim, do you? Of course, it also might depend on the time of day and day of the week. It's 12:43 PM on a Sunday here, there might be more people online in my area than there will be in about 12+ hours.

What we call "claimed speeds" are actually a "theoretical maximum" presuming a perfect signal-to-noise ratio and no hardware loss. The reality of it is that for every little bit of level 1 infrastructure and whatever imperfections lie within, you lose a bit of that theoretical maximum. In the industry it's generally presumed that 85% percent of the theoretical maximum is pretty good.

I'm unsure as to the specifics of port utilization as they apply to DSL networks, but I'm well familiar with them for cable networks. If anyone wants more specifics on this topic, just ask me or Shane.

Wow, you guys sure do know your stuff. I'm just glad I made the long overdue leap to DSL in August. Prior to that, I was happy when I was connected at 45.2 Kb/s. (that's pretty blazing for dialup. ;))

Not horrid for mobile, but it does cost £3.57 a Gigabyte.
