it's a question of licence, mostly, I think; I don't use java too much myself so I'm not 100% sure but I think functionality across the two is broadly similar.

Sun Java is proprietary so you will have to accept their licence. Openjdk, as the name suggests, provides an open alternative (I'm not actually sure which licence, though).
