I have to manage a few Windows servers remotely and use rdesktop - works great. I do it from terminal and put it all my options and IP address and so on...

I'd like to have a Custom launcher on my desktop or under a menu for each of them (3 in total)

On my Ubuntu desktop - it's very easy to do, but I have not yet been able to do same on my little Asus eeePC 701 netbook - running Peppermint. Of note: this little Asus has never run so good - much better than the original Xandros - soooo much much faster. Lean and mean.

Can you anyone explain how to do this ?

Thanks

Denis

Sounds like what you are wanting is a bash script to automate the rdesktop login, and then place the file in your Desktop folder to place an icon on your desktop to launch the script perhaps?
If so, here's what i found doing a simple google search of the ubuntu forums. link
That should give you a good start on the script
here's another link that outlines a method for passing a password while keeping it secure that might help out
if not, post back and the community will help you out

I know about the scripting part - having used Ubuntu for a while. I know more about Gnome I guess.

My issue is with Peppermint's desktop - how do I add a new customer launcher to it ? LXDE instead of Gnome ?

I can't seem to find that info.

I want 3 icons on my desktop: Server 1, Server 2 and Server 3.

Or maybe a new folder under the menu, Remote , with the same 3 servers with separate functions.

Thanks,

DS

As long as you've got pcmanfm handling your desktop, if you place the files in your /home/user/Desktop folder, they should appear as icons on your desktop.

OK I'm starting to understand....

Under Ubuntu and Fedora for example, I am able to click on the Taskbar, Add to Panel, and then pick Custom App Launcher, I can then do what I want easily - how could I do this under Peppermint ?

Thank you

Denis

You would need to create .desktop files for your scripts and place them in /usr/share/applications.
This will give you menu entries, as well as allow you to right click on lxpanel, add another application launcher, then select the file you want to launch with it by right clicking on the newly added launcher and selecting 'Application Launch Bar" settings

Just for example, this is a .desktop file I have for launching a script to play audio files from the task bar
[Desktop Entry]
Name=music
Exec=.music.sh
Type=Application
Categories=GTK;AudioVideo;
Icon=xchat.xpm

.music.sh is placed in /usr/bin so it's in my path

It's not as friendly as the fleshier desktop environments, to be sure, but it does work and it's hardly difficult once demonstrated. I wonder if the OP felt that the previous poster's advice was helpful?
