Disclaimer / Warning: The team are not responsible in any way for Pastebin or content that is posted there. It is a public facility, therefore be careful about posting personal or confidential information there, and similarly beware that anyone can post anything there and link to it, including spam. That said, it's still a very resource, so please read on!

Occasionally you might want or be asked to post output from a terminal command to provide diagnostic information. Some commands output a lot of information if they are not given a command line switch or filtered. Inxi is OK, but output much longer than about twenty lines pasted straight into a code box or inline with your post makes the forums quite difficult to read. They are also somewhat off putting, I find, since they mix in lengthy system data (much of which is likely to be irrelevant) with the actual body of your request.

We have a solution called pastebin. It requires no signup or login to use (although you can put an email in if you like).

It's a simple code sharing site. Paste your output in, select "one month" in the dropdown selection box (ideal for forum posts), and hit submit. It redirects at this point to a unique url; copy this url into your support request; like this for example:

Here's sample output:

Candidates for pasting to pastebin rather than posting inline include output from, off the top of my head:

lspci -v
iwlist wlan0 scanning
cat /dev/urandom

You could always try some of those commands out for an idea of what is meant by long output in this context. Don't do the last one; it's a joke (although it's not harmful; ctrl+c out of it if you already did ;) ).

This is simply a nice way of making the forums more readable and getting you help more effectively :)

Thanks for reading.
