Class: Software installation tutorial
Difficulty: Straightforward
Time: About half an hour
Desirability: XBMC is an attractive media centre

Thanks to chaos for submitting this how to for anyone who wants to make their friends jealous with their super media center.

This how to only deals with installing the software, but xbmc has quite a friendly GUI. Mind, it runs in fullscreen and is meant to transform your machine into a media center, so I'm guessing that that off button will shut down your system! As always, save everything and back up before trying something new.

I tested these instructions and everything works smoothly.

For those who don't know xbmc is a lovely media center which originated on the xbox but is now available for win mac linux etc. it will play videos, music and even display weather widgets in a nice skinable self contained environment.

As peppermint is lovely and light, this will be blazing fast and look great on a large screen tv/monitor, below is a guide to installing it.

First we add the repositories for XBMC by clicking ctr+alt+t together to open the terminal, copy and paste the code below,

gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

enter your password if asked, then the leafpad text editor will open with a list of code, scroll down to the bottom of the list and add,

deb maverick main

(no, really. natty specific packages have not yet been released. The maverick ones work fine. If you find out that natty packages have been released please pm rich_roast who'll update this tutorial to reflect) then press ctrl+s to save it and close leafpad, back at the terminal enter,

sudo apt-key adv --keyserver --recv-keys 64234534
sudo apt-get update

then enter

apt install xbmc
apt install xbmc data
apt install xbmc standalone

and you're all set, you will find xbmc in the sound & video menu, i also did a desktop icon, open leafpad and copy/paste the code below,

If you're lazy, you could always just right-click on the launcher in menu -> sound and video and tick the desktop launcher box

#!/usr/bin/env xdg-open
[Desktop Entry]

and save as 'XBMC' to the desktop.

For more info follow this guide.
