The full title of this is:

Tip for Setting Up a Permanent Shared Folder Without Any Command Line With Windows/VirtualBox Host and Linux Guest

Thanks to sudonoob for doing the research and posting the steps.

They were tested with:

VirtualBox 4.0.8
Hosts are MS Windows x32 (both XP and 7)
Guests are Linux x32; Linux Mint 10 & 11, Zorin 5 Core, Peppermint Two (probably works for most recent Ubuntu based releases)

And here are the steps:

  1. Start with the setting up of a shared/exchange folder in MS Windows; eg. c:\xchng
  2. Launch VirtualBox in MS Windows (Linux already installed with Guest Additions)
  3. In the VirtualBox config. menu, select the Linux VM and click on Shared Folders
  4. Chose Add Shared Folders, with Automount and Make Permanent options ticked
  5. Navigate to the path of the shared/exchange folder (C:\xchng in this example), then confirm and close the window
  6. Launch the Linux VM
  7. Click on Menu then Control Center, or Menu - Preferences, or Menu - System ...
  8. Click on Users & Groups - Manage Groups - "vboxsf" down in the scrolling list - Properties
  9. Check mark "vboxsf" Group Name linked to <Current User> Group Members
  10. Enter password to confirm change, close all dialog windows and reboot the VM
  11. After the reboot, open the file manager, browse to folder \media\ and open it
  12. You should now see the shared/exchange folder (xchng) created in MS Windows and declared in VirtualBox. (Though, renamed with a prefix "sf_" (sf_xchng))
  13. Open that folder. You should be able to Copy/Past/Delete files or folders from V2P or P2V

The sf_xchng folder stays permanently mounted even after reboot.

Much easier than with the Terminal.

Any problems, see the original thread and post: here
