This is an attempt to document the steps to keeping my printer, an HP Laserjet 1020 working. It is a very good printer, just not the most Linux friendly. (After ten years running various linuxes, it is embarrassing to have to install Windows XP just to print a document.) Please review, and advise any glaring oversights. I tend to forget the steps if I don't write them down. : :(

1. Install foo2zjs: # apt update && apt install foo2zjs
{or get the latest is at the website: http://foo2zjs.rkkda.com/ }

In the address bar of Firefox (Chromium 5.0.375.99 crashed):
localhost:631 or http://localhost:631/
then
Administration > Install printer > etc., set defaults, etc.

If, after the installation of foo2zjs your printer gives no errors but doesn't print,
then with the printer turned on and USB connected, execute the code in step 2 below.

2. Create /data/bin/hp1020set as follows:
Code:
# The firmware of the printer must be uploaded after turning it on.
# You can use a hotplug/udev script which comes with foo2zjs,
# or do it manually:
#
#cat /usr/share/foo2zjs/firmware/sihp1020.dl >  /dev/usb/lp0
#
# Correct the path to local sihp1020.dl
cat '/data/Hardware/HP LaserJet 1020/foo2zjs/sihp1020.dl' > /dev/usb/lp0
Name it hp1020set or whatever you like, then make it executable.

3. Make it permanent: that is start at boot up --the printer must be turned on,
then call it from Autostart re Vogan:
Code:
sudo nano /etc/xdg/lxsession/Peppermint/autostart

then insert this line at the end of the file:
Code:
/route/to/hp1020set
If you turn off the printer, you need to call it again, manually {or if for some unknown reason it refuses to print}.

If you have one of these printers and try this setup, please let me know how it goes for you. It has saved me from pulling out my hair.

try installing this terminal:

apt install hplip

plug ur hp printer and see if the default hplip drivers work.. Now if they don't install hplip-cups

apt install hplip-cups

then go to the properties of your printer and try to change the driver to hplip-cups instead of the default from hplip.

Thanks for the info.
I have tried hplip before with mixed results but don't think I ever used your approach.

I will give it a try soon, now that I know that I can make this thing print.
Others have said that hplip is a better choice, or results in better printing?

regards,
Richard.

I found this on another thread, and it works really well
Code:
apt install cups hplip system-config-printer-gnome

Edit: Credit goes to Kendall. :D

Hi,

Thanks. I'll keep it in mind if my printer ever misbehaves.
It's only 3 yrs old. Hopefully it will last a few more.
I will really look for a more linux compatible one, next time. ;)
