I was revisiting an earlier thread related to slow boot up times for my HP Pavilion G6, since my 2003 Compaq M2000 boots into WinXP faster at the moment

http://peppermintos.net/viewtopic.php?f=83&t=5385&start=0

opening the syslog i notice:
Code:
Feb  7 06:06:13 pavilionG6 anacron[1050]: Job `cron.daily' terminated
Feb  7 06:06:13 pavilionG6 anacron[1050]: Normal exit (1 job run)
Feb  7 06:06:25 pavilionG6 kernel: [  812.290500] ===>rt_ioctl_giwscan. 3(3) BSS returned, data->length = 743
Feb  7 06:06:35 pavilionG6 kernel: [  822.291332] GetDesiredTssiAndCurrentTssi: BBP TSSI INFO is not ready. (BbpR47 = 0x94)

line repeats for more than a minute... and keeps repeating for the entire time the laptop has been on...

It's a wireless problem .. can you point me to the topic you used to compile the wireless drivers ?

Did this occur before you compiled the drivers ?

certainly... here's the thread i keep revisiting... http://peppermintos.net/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=5798

i've always felt the boot and reboot was slow on this machine... just irked me this am as i turned the WinXP laptop on after turning on this one and it finished booting before the much newer one...

I'll have a look at that topic in a sec .. but was it slow booting with the default wireless driver ?

I just wanna make sure this is what's stalling the boot.

Might also be worth running:
Code:
dmesg > ~/Desktop/dmesg.txt

you'll then find a file called "dmesg.txt" on your desktop .. can you pastebin its contents

I've always felt like the boot on this machine has been slower than it should be... i usually turn it on and go make coffee to avoid becoming annoyed, but today's the first time in a while that I began digging into why. Here's the results from
Code:
dmesg > ~/Desktop/dmesg.txt

http://pastebin.com/3JR6XQHy

I was also trying to dig to see if any later kernels have anything new for Ralink drivers.... and stumbled across this...

No, what I meant was...

IIRC immediately after installation your card is using the rt2800pci driver .. but you then compile the STA drivers.

What I'm asking is .. did the PC used to hang at boot when it was using the default rt2800pci driver, or is this only occuring since you compiled and installed the STA drivers ?

hmmm ... now that you mention it, right after i got it running this time 'round it may have been a wee bit faster, but not by much

EDIT right after i got this current install running on Feb 1, I wrote
Quote:
yippeee... 65 second reboot with lots of ugly patchy graphic display attempts...

now booting takes a couple of minutes

Unless the rt2800pci drivers were rubbish, I'd consider going back to them .. the RT5390STA drivers I modified are spamming your dmesg file terribly, so there's something wrong with them.

I'm afraid ATM you have to decide whether you need the extra signal strength over boot times .. but the dmesg file might be growing quite large (file size) too.

In truth, "signal strength" isn't the important factor (as long as it doesn't drop so low that it starts to affect signal stability) .. it's more about dropped packets and connection speed.
You also have to bear in mind, the "signal strength" will be being reported by the drivers .. so even though the open source drivers say 50% and the Ralink proprietary drivers report 100% doesn't mean one of them isn't lying ;)

Which way do you want to go ?

and just as a matter of interest, can you post the output from:
Code:
ls -al /var/log | grep dmesg

Code:
spence@pavilionG6 ~ $ ls -al /var/log | grep dmesg
-rw-r-----  1 root   adm    51665 Feb  8 20:24 dmesg
-rw-r-----  1 root   adm    62018 Feb  8 15:08 dmesg.0

-rw-r-----  1 root   adm    16494 Feb  6 15:06 dmesg.4.gz

guess we might as well go back to the original drivers...
