I've been getting the above error message on the last few reboots, a quick searching via peppermint search tells me i've got to edit some config files which reference the standard folders I chose to delete after my latest snafu and complete reinstall of p4... evidently they are stored in different directories than those which lubuntu stores them: :?

http://askubuntu.com/questions/374632/lubuntu-the-specified-directory-is-not-valid/374899#374899

which leads me here: http://askubuntu.com/questions/5203/what-happens-if-i-delete-the-default-folders-in-my-home-folder

i deleted music, public, templates and video, then renamed documents and downloads to suit my purposes... just need to know where to find the references to them so i may safely edit...

further digging leads me to consider commenting out the deleted files references in /home/spence/.config/users-dirs ... :P now to reboot to test my theory...

yippee... that worked... now off to review the thread where PCNetSpec helped me recompiled the wifi drivers ...

EDIT: spoke too soon was greeted with a
Code:
The specified directory home/spence/le is not valid
on the 2nd reboot after my fix, third reboot is giving me a blank error dialogue box along with disappearing desktop background colors, probably related to my temperamental graphics card again? bah

also noticing the previously deleted folders have reappeared in my file manager... so much for beginning to imagine I'm becoming an advanced user :?

EDIT: just recollecting the first couple of times i saw that error message, it included a domino looking character in the place where Home/Spence/LE now appears, and am scratching my head about what /LE is referring to?

... now noticing it doesn't occur with every re-boot either... :?

What's the contents of
Code:
gedit /etc/xdg/user-dirs.defaults

and
Code:
gedit ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs

You've made your home folder the "Desktop" :shock:

Run:
Code:
gedit ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs

and make it read:
Code:
# This file is written by xdg-user-dirs-update
# If you want to change or add directories, just edit the line you're
# interested in. All local changes will be retained on the next run
# Format is XDG_xxx_DIR="$HOME/yyy", where yyy is a shell-escaped
# homedir-relative path, or XDG_xxx_DIR="/yyy", where /yyy is an
# absolute path. No other format is supported.
#
XDG_DESKTOP_DIR="$HOME/Desktop"
XDG_DOWNLOAD_DIR="$HOME/Downloads"
XDG_TEMPLATES_DIR="$HOME/Templates"
XDG_PUBLICSHARE_DIR="$HOME/Public"
XDG_DOCUMENTS_DIR="$HOME/Documents"
XDG_MUSIC_DIR="$HOME/Music"
XDG_PICTURES_DIR="$HOME/Pictures"
XDG_VIDEOS_DIR="$HOME/Videos"

Now if you want to delete any of the directories, DON'T just remove the name in this file, comment out the ENTIRE line.

And you CANNOT delete your Desktop directory

Now if you want to remove any folders from your home folder .. let me know which.

that certainly wasn't my intention... I didn't set out to delete Desktop not certain how i fanagled that?...

anyway i edited gedit ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs after copying and pasting your file in i made the following changes:

#
XDG_DESKTOP_DIR="$HOME/Desktop"
XDG_DOWNLOAD_DIR="$HOME/Downloads"
# XDG_TEMPLATES_DIR="$HOME/Templates"
# XDG_PUBLICSHARE_DIR="$HOME/Public"
# XDG_DOCUMENTS_DIR="$HOME/Documents"
# XDG_MUSIC_DIR="$HOME/Music"
# XDG_PICTURES_DIR="$HOME/Pictures"
# XDG_VIDEOS_DIR="$HOME/Videos"

as mentioned earlier, i did comment certain lines out... nor did I attempt to delete Desktop... but must have fudged something...

PCNetSpec wrote:

I commented out the lines for the folders I prefer not to have... but after reboot I'm presented with the following error message

Code:
The specified directory '/home/spence/Desktop' is not valid

as well as a gedit ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs file which has jettisoned my edits:

#
XDG_DESKTOP_DIR="$HOME/"
XDG_DOWNLOAD_DIR="$HOME/"
XDG_TEMPLATES_DIR="$HOME/Templates"
XDG_PUBLICSHARE_DIR="$HOME/Public"
XDG_DOCUMENTS_DIR="$HOME/Documents"
XDG_MUSIC_DIR="$HOME/Music"
XDG_PICTURES_DIR="$HOME/Pictures"
XDG_VIDEOS_DIR="$HOME/Videos"

guess I'm supposed to be editing xdg-user-dirs-update instead?

What's the output from:
Code:
ls -l /home/spence | grep Desktop

If there's no output, run:
Code:
mkdir /home/spence/Desktop

then
Code:
chmod 700 /home/spence/Desktop

Now see if you still get that error.

the error message is now history... so changing the spelling of Desktop to desktop is verbotten eh?

:oops:

i have a thing about having all lower case folder names... guess i'll let it slide...

Kind of .. remember, Linux (unlike Windows) *IS* case sensitive

So "Desktop" and "desktop" and indeed "dEsktop" are all different file/folder names.

You *can* change it to "desktop" but you'd have to change the ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs file to match.

Personally I'd not change the "Desktop" directory, as that one may be a "special case" that's referenced elsewhere too.

the error message has not returned in half a dozen reboots thus far... So I'll mark this one solved... off to chase the next niggly detail... the touchpad
