Good morning all, I hope everyone has survived the weekend unscathed. This is what I am trying to do without much success as I can't find any definitive info.. I have made SSBs of the BBC radio stations and they work beautifully. I have them placed in Sound & Video. This works but is not ideal. I would like to make a manual menu item, for the sake of argument called, "Radio Stations". I want this menu item to appear in the Ice placement options if possible. I have installed Stellarium and it is automatically placed in the menu structure in, "Education". However, this option doesn't appear in Ice. This leads me to believe that I may be able to customise Ice to my requirements. Am I able to modify Ice to offer the additional categories? I'm not interested in creating a self organising menu just a one that I can edit manually. Many thanks.

This isn't straight forward, so if it were anywhere other than the "Advanced" section......

OK, to add a "Radio Station" directory to the menu directory structure..

run:
Code:
sudo gedit /etc/xdg/menus/lxde-applications.menu

find the section that reads
Code:
   <!-- Office -->
   <Menu>
      <Name>Office</Name>
      <Directory>lxde-office.directory</Directory>
      <Include>
         <And>
            <Category>Office</Category>
         </And>
      </Include>
   </Menu> <!-- End Office -->

   <!-- System Tools-->
   <Menu>
      <Name>System</Name>
      <Directory>lxde-system-tools.directory</Directory>
      <Include>
         <And>
            <Category>System</Category>
            <Not><Category>Settings</Category></Not>
            <Not><Category>PackageManager</Category></Not>
         </And>
      </Include>
   </Menu>    <!-- End System Tools -->

and change it to:-
Code:
   <!-- Office -->
   <Menu>
      <Name>Office</Name>
      <Directory>lxde-office.directory</Directory>
      <Include>
         <And>
            <Category>Office</Category>
         </And>
      </Include>
   </Menu> <!-- End Office -->

   <!-- Radio Stations-->
      <Menu>
      <Name>Radio</Name>
      <Directory>lxde-radio.directory</Directory>
      <Include>
         <And>
            <Category>Radio</Category>
         </And>
      </Include>
   </Menu> <!-- End Radio Stations -->

   <!-- System Tools-->
   <Menu>
      <Name>System</Name>
      <Directory>lxde-system-tools.directory</Directory>
      <Include>
         <And>
            <Category>System</Category>
            <Not><Category>Settings</Category></Not>
            <Not><Category>PackageManager</Category></Not>
         </And>
      </Include>
   </Menu>    <!-- End System Tools -->

SAVE the file.

Now run:
Code:
sudo gedit /etc/xdg/peppermint/menus/lxde-applications.menu

find the section that reads:-
Code:
    <Menu>
        <Name>Other</Name>
        <Directory>lxde-other.directory</Directory>
        <OnlyUnallocated/>
        <Include>
            <And/>
        </Include>
    </Menu>

<!-- Administration Menu, to include in Layout section -->
    <Menu>
        <Name>Administration</Name>
        <Directory>lxde-system-tools.directory</Directory>
        <Include>
            <And>
                <Category>Settings</Category>
                <Category>System</Category>
            </And>
            <Or>
                <Category>System</Category>
            </Or>
        </Include>
    </Menu>

and change it to:-
Code:
    <Menu>
        <Name>Other</Name>
        <Directory>lxde-other.directory</Directory>
        <OnlyUnallocated/>
        <Include>
            <And/>
        </Include>
    </Menu>

    <Menu>
      <Name>Radio</Name>
      <Directory>lxde-radio.directory</Directory>
        <Include>
            <Category>Radio</Category>
        </Include>
    </Menu>

<!-- Administration Menu, to include in Layout section -->
    <Menu>
        <Name>Administration</Name>
        <Directory>lxde-system-tools.directory</Directory>
        <Include>
            <And>
                <Category>Settings</Category>
                <Category>System</Category>
            </And>
            <Or>
                <Category>System</Category>
            </Or>
        </Include>
    </Menu>

SAVE the file.

Now run:
Code:
sudo gedit /usr/share/desktop-directories/lxde-radio.directory

and when a BLANK file opens, make it read:-
Code:
[Desktop Entry]
Name=Radio Stations
Comment=Radio Stations
Icon=radio
Type=Directory

SAVE the file.

OK, now you need to edit any .desktop files created by Ice that you want in the "Radio Stations" menu.

run:
Code:
pcmanfm ~/.local/share/applications

When the file manager opens a new window, look for your BBC radio stations icons, and one at a time right click them and select "Text Editor"

When they open in gedit, find the line that reads:
Code:
Categories=GTK;AudioVideo;

and change it to
Code:
Categories=GTK;Radio;

SAVE the file(s).

They should now appear in the menus under the "Radio Stations" submenu.

=======================================================

As for adding that as an option in the Ice application .. that would take some modification to the Ice applications python script .. it would also get overwritten if Ice was ever updated.

Do you know python ?

Hi PCNetSpec, you sir are a star. Thanks for the swift response. The menu edit looks straightforward. I'll get on that later. I don't know python. I had an idea that modifying Ice would be awkward and I didn't think about update overwriting the modifications. This edit should tidy up my menu nicely though. I'll let you guys know how I get along and of course mark it solved when done! I am quite honestly getting so much enjoyment out of Peppermint OS. It really is a stunner. Many Thanks.

You're welcome :)

Be aware, the "Radio Stations" submenu won't show up in the menus until there's something in it .. ie. until you modify one the .desktop files you created with Ice.

in other words, empty submenu's aren't displayed.

Nice :)

You do realise you already have a screen capture tool ?

either:-

a) hit PrtSc to capture the whole desktop
or
b) hit Alt+PrtSc to capture just the active window
or
c) Start the "Screenshot" utility from menu > Accessories > Screenshot

a and b will save to your home folder
c will ask where to save
c also allows you to set a delay .. so you can open menu's etc ;)

Thanks for that. I don't know why but I have never been able to get PnScr and Alt+PnScr to work. It might be something to do with my oddball keyboard. I like Shutter and I'm used to Gimp. Always good practice.
