[SOLVED]

I've been building/updating/modernizing a Dell Latitude ATG D630 lappy.

On my ruggedized HDD (shock-mounted) I did a refresh install of Peppermint Four Re-Spin (64-bit).

GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0 was set by default, in the GRUB config. I commented it out, while I was installing programs, and so forth, and so on -- doing multiple reboots, et cetera. I wanted to see what was going on in the background.

When GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0 was commented out, I was asked for a password at login.

When GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0 was active, I was automatically logged in!?!?! Never seen this before.

A couple of days ago, I installed a SSD, and decided to give Crunchbang Waldorf a try -- see how long I could stand it, before I wiped it off the drive. LoL! So far, I like it just fine -- not as much as Peppermint, mind you, but I thought I'd give it a fair trial.

Anyway, today, I noticed that Crunchbang asks me for a password at login regardless of whether or not GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0 is active.

Got me to thinking that this might be a bug in Peppermint Four Re-Spin.

Feel free to move this thread to a different category, if you wish.

AFAIK that's the default GRUB 2 behaviour ..

to make the GRUB menu visible on a single boot system you must

a) comment out GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0
and
b) have a positive integer in GRUB_TIMEOUT=(n)

Thanks, for the reply.

I knew I was going to have a hard time explaining the situation, so allow me to continue... :)

Yes, I'm aware of the GRUB menu being hidden or not. And, yes, even if it is hidden, you can hold the <shift> key down to invoke it. However, that's not what I was *trying* to convey.

What I'm writing about is how, in Peppermint Four Re-Spin, when you hide the GRUB menu, it auto-logs you into the desktop. Put another way, when you do a cold boot, with the GRUB menu hidden, you end up at the desktop, without having to furnish a password.

When the GRUB menu is not hidden, Peppermint Four Re-Spin asks for a password, as it properly should.

While this may seem like a trivial matter, I'll be lugging this laptop around the USA on business trips. At times, I'll be leaving it unattended on conference tables, during caucuses in contract negotiations, and so forth. Thus there is always the chance that it may be stolen. I can't put in my pocket, and carry it around like a smart phone, 24/7/365.

I do not want any of my computers to auto-login... ever... no matter what. If all it takes is somebody booting into a live session and uncommenting a single line in the GRUB config, to automatically gain access to my laptop, especially on a machine that makes extensive use of cloud storage, I consider it a huge security gap.

Make sense now?

It certainly does .. I'll look into this as that would definitely be security issue

Oddly, I can't for the life of me see how a GRUB setting can be affecting LightDM's login screen .. but until I test it I'll have to take your word for it.

Are you saying you don't even have to run update-grub ? .. and that you've never enabled auto-login ?

Must be a 64 bit issue as I've tried it on two 32 bit installs and it takes me to the login screen.
I don't have a 64 bit install at present.

I don't see how GRUB settings can affect LightDM either. Been so long since I've hidden the GRUB menu in Linux et al. I thought that might be a new feature. Heh!

Yes, I have to run update-grub, soooo... I'll amend my declaration to include: All it would take is somebody uncommenting a single line in the GRUB config, and updating GRUB.

I just swapped my HDD/SSD in preparation for some questions.

It's still going directly to the desktop, with the GRUB menu hidden, even though I've specified "Asked on login". I didn't just change that setting -- been that way all along. And, it does ask me, when GRUB isn't hidden.

I'll do some forensics, and see if I can spot anything. Might be something specific to my install -- bad download - corrupt file or something.

Let me know if you can reproduce it, or not, please.

Thanks for the report.

Maybe we can get somebody on 64-bit Peppermint Four Re-Spin to test it, too. ;)

Er...

You're running Re-Spin, right?
