I gave up smoking yesterday, and successfully managed my first 24 hour period without a cigarette in about 35 years. Struggling a bit this morning, but sticking to it .. so if I get a bit tetchy with anyone .......... TOUGH!!!

Congratulations. I did this myself back in 2006, so I know it's not "easy," but you can do it. Though, I found a hobby to get serious about that helped me power though the cravings. That was around the time that I started getting really serious about 3D CGI. I found that, when I wanted to go smoke a cigarette, I just kept working and the craving subsided. So, if you've got something that you think might take your mind off of the cravings, that will make things go easier. (at least, it did for me)

In that case, don't leave the computer when you have a craving. Also, you may want to keep some snacks and/or gum on hand. You're probably going to gain weight during this, I and everyone I know who has quit smoking has gained weight.

Good. I have given up twice, so I feel your crave! Firstly, go cold-turkey. Anything with nicotine in it just prolongs the inevitable, but be assured that it only lasts a few days. Secondly. Try mindful breathing (and yes I know it sounds like a weekend in a teepee burning josticks), it's actually a good way of focusing and relaxing. Most of the "smoking experience" is actually a backwards way of mindfulness.. five minutes to yourself, deep breaths, relaxation. You just don't need the tar, carbon monoxide and other crap to achieve that. Be strong, and don't get drunk for the time being. Booze is the resolve-killer

Sory, for being late to the party... PCNetSpec wrote: I gave up smoking yesterday [...] Good, for you -- hope you're still smoke-free! I don't know if you had an 'event' that prompted it. A co-worker, and friend of many years, recently HAD to give up smoking. 'L' is a trim, good-looking guy, but he's been having trouble breathing lately. He had a good run -- 30 years of smoking 2 packs a day. Last week, he said his doctor held a piece of paper in front of his face, and asked him to blow on it. As hard as 'L' tried, he didn't have enough 'wind' to make it move. Hopefully, something like that didn't happen to you. Hang in there...

Yup, still not smoking, and nope no single "event", just being out of breath by the end of the road/top of the stairs, etc. .. and being "floored" every time the kids bring the flu back from college (between the 2 of them seems like they have a "let's see who can kill dad first" competition going on, as they take it in turns to bring some bug or other back which means I seem to be perpetually ill). Thanks for the continued interest though
