hi, I have ppm4 in one machine, and Ppm3 in 3 machines. Ppm4 out-of-the box looks Ok for me, with very little customization. Is really nice. On the other side, Ppm3 is requires some tweaking to have a better look.
I did a little customization: change fonts, bar color, add docky. I also downloaded xcompmgr, because Ppm3, apparently, don't have a composer. This is the key question I have:

1 - xcompmgr act on docky but I don't know how to activate windows shadows and transparencies. When I try to introduce parameters in the terminal, it says that "another composer is active". I was not able to install a GUI for this composer.
2 - I need a composer but I want also retain the small footprint of peppermint (no compiz/emerald: only a light composer). Is xcompmgr enough or is available a better composer?
3 - Is possible to backport from Ppm4 some tweakings to Ppm3?
4 - Installing a new theme or icons, maybe? which one and how?

Any suggestion (easy, for beginners) to make nicer peppermint 3?

If I were you I'd uninstall xcompmgr:
Code:
sudo apt-get remove --purge xcompmgr

and use compton instead .. compton is a fork of xcompmgr that contains a lot of bug fixes.

There are instructions for installing/and autostarting compton here:
viewtopic.php?p=38032#p38032
Those instructions will give you window/menu dropshadows too.

Hi PcNetspec,

I've tried to install compton but I can't

1 - I have addedd the ppa to install directly from the repositories --won't install

Code:
$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:yunnxx/gnome3
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt-get install compton

2 - I have downloaded the i386 deb package, but won't install because :

Code:
Error: Dependency is not satisfiable: libconfig9

I can't find libconfig9 in Synaptic.
If I try to install with --force all, compton do istall but don't work.

:shock:

Any particular reason you used a different PPA to the one suggested ?

Your PPA doesn't contain a version of compton for Peppermint 3 (12.04 precise)
https://launchpad.net/~yunnxx/+archive/ ... er=precise
and the version it contains for Ubuntu 12.10 is older than the version at the PPA I suggested. (your PPA = compton 0.0.2, my suggested PPA = compton 0.0.9)

The PPA I suggested is also maintained by Richard Grenville, the developer of compton ;)
https://github.com/chjj/compton

======================================================

Here's the instructions for the PPA I suggested:
Code:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:richardgv/compton

then
Code:
sudo apt-get update

then
Code:
sudo apt-get install compton

Then edit:
Code:
sudo gedit /etc/xdg/lxsession/Peppermint/autostart

and add a single NEW line at the bottom that reads:-

@compton -cC

SAVE the file .. then log off/on again (or reboot) to test for drop shadows.

====================================================

It may be a good idea (unless there's something else your using from your PPA) to purge your PPA.

Thanks a lot PCNetSpec! :)
Now I have compton working. Better than xcompmgr, for sure. IMHO must be integrated as default in all light distributions becouse don't eat much memory and make nicer the appearence of the desktop.
I'm configuring the behavior of compton now.
I like so much Peppermint! 8-)

Peppermint 4 has a built in compositor that does the same thing, and has a nice GUI for configuration ;)

Thanks for marking the topic solved :)
