i've done quite a bit of customization so far but something that i'm missing is the login screen. so far i've changed the background but i would like to change the colours and possibly the layout. any ideas about how should do this would be appreciated.

By login screen, you mean the LightDM greeter with the grey rectangular box for name/password/session? It is kinda tricky to play with. Here is a pretty basic rundown of LightDM and what it does/you can do. This shows what most distros do with it, and is good to figure out how to start re-designing it. And then there's the actual tutorial on how to write a greeter and run it.

I have had some issues with trying to redesign just the UI for LightDM's plain GTK greeter, but that may just be my own problems with learning Glade. My one real piece of advice is to have another OS on a USB or dual boot, because if you mess up the greeter, it can be a real pain to log-in, and sometimes it's easier to just boot another OS, and revert to the backups.
