Try formatting it FAT32

Okay, now formatted as FAT32. It is recognized as such in Disk Utility. I reboot with the SDHC in the reader, and it still does not automount. My 8GB works fine. When I put the 32GB into an external card reader, it comes up almost instantly.

To use the 32GB in the internal card reader, I have to go to Disk utility and wait for the reader to acknowledge the 32GB card. Then I can mount the card (the card shows up when I go to home/media, but it does not come up on the side of my file manager page).

Please be aware, if you use FAT32 you have a maximum file size of 4GB (give or take a byte)

When it comes to large storage that needs to be readable on other systems, I tend to use NTFS
(I do this for my 16GB USB that I put in my Samsung TV to watch movies)

If it's only ever going to be used in the Linux PC I'd even consider going for a Linux filesystem :)

1. Yes, understand the 4GB file size limitation for FAT32. Not concerned about that. Never thought about going to NTFS.

2. Reluctant to go to simply a linux filesystem since I sometimes do move the card. However, I can move the data easily enough and keep the card always permanently in the PC.

I guess the big question for me is why it's having so much trouble automounting the card?

Dunno .. possibly a formatting issue.

If I were you I'd try using gparted to create a fresh msdos partition table, then format it say NTFS.

If it still has problems I'd have to guess it's a FUSE problem or possibly a driver issue.

Is the card recognised if you turn on the PC and boot with the card already in the slot ?

I will try a reformat.

The card us recognized when I turn on the computer with it in the slot, but is not automounted, unlike the 8GB SDHC that was there previously.

If recreating the partition table and formatting doesn't help .. we could always mount it at bootup through fstab .. but you'de have to remember to unmount it from the command line if you ever want to remove it whilst the PC is running.

Yep, I think I may have to go the fstab route.

Card formatted as NTFS shows up as "unknown" under disk utility (and will not let me mount it).

Interestingly, putting the card into a USB adapter causes it to show up instantly. It's just the EEE's internal card reader that seems to be having these issues.

UPDATE: I think this might be a matter of patience and the r/w speed of the internal card reader trying to deal with 32GB. I left it in the reader and worked on some other stuff (actual work :) ) when I looked over at my file manager and noted that a "32GB SDHC" had appeared. I was able to access, read/write, etc,. So I'm thinking it actually will/does automount,it's just taking a lot longer to do so.

PCNetSpec: As always, my thanks for your help, friend. Your advice is always greatly appreciated.
