When I fire up my computer the screen brightness is always at 100%. Is there a way to make it so it is at about 70-75% upon start up?

I am using Peppermint 4.

Thanks in advance.

I can find no way to make what you set with the brightness keys persistent across reboots.
(it will always default back to 100%)

BUT

I can tell you how to make 100% dimmer .. is that good enough ?

=======================================================

You could use either of these commands:
xrandr --output LVDS1 --brightness 0.75
(LVDS1 needs to be whatever your screen is called in the output from "xrandr")
or
xgamma -gamma 0.75
to set brightness to 75% .. and add that to an autostart .desktop file.

FYI
xrandr --output LVDS1 --brightness 1
or
xgamma -gamma 1
will set brightness back to where it is now.

=======================================================

The autostart .desktop files contents would read something like:-

Quote:
[Desktop Entry]
Name=Screen Brightness Autostart
Comment=Set screen brightness to 75% at bootup
Exec=xrandr --output LVDS1 --brightness 0.75
Icon=video-display
Terminal=false
Type=Application

=======================================================

Most of that info is as much for my memory as anything else .. let me know if you want to take this any further, and I'll be happy to help (if needed) :)

Thanks!

So if I understand this correctly, after making these changes, when the brightness is turned up all way it would then be at 75% (or whatever I choose it to be). In that case, if I did decide to turn the brightness up to 100% I would be unable to (unless I reverted back to the original settings). Is that correct?

Yeah, that's exactly what I'm saying .. but so far I can find no other way of doing this.

I know where the brightness setting is in the filesystem .. but manually editing it at bootup doesn't seem to work.

I'll keep digging if it's important enough to you ?

Thanks.

I'd like for the machine to boot up at a reduced brightness, while still having the option of increasing the brightness, by using the hotkeys, if necessary.

I really appreciate your willingness to dig and help me out, but it's not a huge priority. I was just wondering if anyone had a quick answer. Having said that, if you happen to stumble upon a quick fix during your digging...great! Please let me know. Otherwise, don't go out of your way.

Thanks again!
