indeedy, reboot and hold the shift key ;)

we have 3.12.0-999, 3.8.0-32, -30 and -29 available to use... wifi was working in -30 and -29...

sorta a shame though, 3.12 boots faster; 45-50 seconds than the 3.8s ... but my wifi is hovering in the 65 to 73% range once i do a
Code:
sudo modprobe rt2800pci nohwcrypt=1
after any reboot

If you boot to 3.8 wifi should still be using the rt5290sta driver.

I guess you need to make a decision on whether you prefer 3.12's improved boot speeds but worse wireless .. or .. 3.8's longer boot speeds and improved wireless ?

Or take the gamble that 3.9 will give you both ?

yes... booting into
Code:
hp@pavilionG6 ~ $ uname -a
Linux pavilionG6 3.8.0-30-generic #44-Ubuntu SMP Thu Aug 22 20:52:24 UTC 2013 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
gives me a perfectly working desktop... and just noticed the networking between my five computers works better too...

So, my choices are block all future kernel upgrades? or recompile the drivers for one of the 3.9 kernels so that all future P4 kernel updates in the 3.8 series will be declined in deference to my "newer" 3.9 kernel?... methinks I like the 2nd option best...

Okey dokey .. let's install the 3.9 kernel, and see if the drivers will compile

To install the 3.9 kernel, open a terminal and run:
Code:
mkdir ~/kernel3.9

then
Code:
cd ~/kernel3.9

then
Code:
wget http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.9-raring/linux-headers-3.9.0-030900_3.9.0-030900.201304291257_all.deb

then
Code:
wget http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.9-raring/linux-headers-3.9.0-030900-generic_3.9.0-030900.201304291257_amd64.deb

then
Code:
wget http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.9-raring/linux-image-3.9.0-030900-generic_3.9.0-030900.201304291257_amd64.deb

then
Code:
sudo dpkg -i *.deb

When that finishes, check to see if you can boot into the 3.9 kernel.

You'll still (at this point) need to use the Shift key to boot into 3.9, but I just want to know if you can.
You can check which kernel you're booted into with
Code:
uname -a

okey dokey then... 3.9 loaded and running, online after a
Code:
sudo modprobe rt2800pci nohwcrypt=1

Code:
hp@pavilionG6 ~ $ uname -a
Linux pavilionG6 3.9.0-030900-generic #201304291257 SMP Mon Apr 29 16:58:15 UTC 2013 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

now off for lunch and chores the rest of the day... guess I'll get to recompiling the rt5290sta drivers this evening...

OK, make sure you're booted to the 3.9 kernel, and follow the instructions here again:
viewtopic.php?p=36158#p36158

and let me know if it works

If it does, we'll remove the 3.12 kernel and make sure 3.9 is the default.

OK then :) .. Make sure you're booted into 3.9, then run:
Code:
sudo apt-get remove linux-image-3.12.0-999-generic linux-headers-3.12.0-999-generic linux-headers-3.12.0-999

When that's done .. REBOOT without doing the "Shift" thing, and post the output from:
Code:
uname -a

Be aware .. if anything goes wrong, you should still be able to do the "Shift" thing if necessary.

further weeded out extraneous kernels... now down to two instead of six
Code:
