At home, I have had no wifi problems at all during my few weeks of experience with linux.

But recently I tried connecting to the wifi at my mother's assisted living facility using peppermint 4. I put in the correct password but it then tells me it was unable to authenticate. If I boot to windows it connects to the network with no issues, after I enter the password.

Oh, also before peppermint I had tried MInt 13/Maya for a week or two and I was able to connect to the assisted living center wifi while using that.

I read the WiFi trouble shooting "how to".
(all of the information below was generated while connected to wifi at home)

The output from: lspci | grep Net is:
04:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM43224 802.11a/b/g/n (rev 01)

lsmod | grep rt2870st returns nothing

and lsmod returns:

Here is the other drivers window. I did previously have the Broadcom 802.11 selected, but changed that to see if it would then connect, but it did not. At home it connects to wifi either way, with Broadcom selected or not.

BCM43224 is supposed to work with any of these 3 drivers "wl" "b43" and "brcmsmac"
That last one is what's loaded now

Try connecting to your router with an ethernet cable, then running:
Code:
sudo apt-get install b43-fwcutter firmware-b43-installer

then
Code:
sudo modprobe -r brcmsmac

then
Code:
sudo modprobe b43

did wireless spring to life ?

If not .. reboot, and post the output from:
Code:
lspci -vnn | grep -i net

and
Code:
lsmod

and
Code:
rfkill list

Thanks I am doing this at home, so do have wireless.

I plugged in network cable and followed the instructions. Wireless went off when I did "sudo modprobe -r brcmsmac"

then came back with "sudo modprobe b43"

I will see if wireless now also works at my mother's assisted living.
It's not really a concern there specifically, but I thought this would indicate that it might not work other places.

On the additional drivers tab, should I leave it as it is or set it to use Broadcom 802.11...?

I may have been misunderstanding the issue here ..

Are you sure you're entering the password correctly ?

When creating a wireless network connection networkmanager will prompt you for 2 passwords ..

The first one to "Authenticate" wants your Linux password.

The second one is the "Wireless Key".

Ahh, that's gotta be it, I did not do 2-steps.

You know what, I just remembered that when I was playing around with mint I had eliminated my password, so that would be why this did not happen then.

Yep, I had not been reading that first pop-up...just assumed it was the network.

I must have tried it about 10 times, without ever noticing  .

Sorry about that.

Thanks for marking the topic solved

I wanted to mark it "nevermind user error", but that would not fit...though, I could just replace the subject with that.

I am guessing tat the hint was "unable to authenticate", that the wifi would not say that.

Actually no, though that *should* have jumped out at me  .. it was because I've done it myself ;)
