g'morning pminters... its happily been a little while since i've needed any triage help with my P4 setup on the hpG6 laptop. I've been having some lagging and lockup issues this last week and was about to follow the advice in this older networking howto http://www.peppermintos.net/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=311 when i became flummoxed by the lack of any entry in the iwconfig file..

Quote:
hp@pavilionG6 ~ $ iwconfig
ra0 Ralink STA ESSID:"sylvester" Nickname:"RT2860STA"
Mode:Managed Frequency=2.422 GHz Access Point: E0:46:9A:79:6D:2A
Bit Rate=58.5 Mb/s
RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
Link Quality=90/100 Signal level:-72 dBm Noise level:-90 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0

eth0 no wireless extensions.

lo no wireless extensions.

I'm gonna hazard that the line i wanna add to my rc.local file will read

Quote:
wconfig ra0 rate 58M

but i'd like some confirmation before I commit and become unable to connect to wifi after a reboot ;~)

After reading that tutorial, I reckon it should read
Code:
iwconfig ra0 rate 54M

I'm guessing the intention is to force the wireless adapter into 54G (802.11g) ratehr than wireless N (802.11n)

Now whilst I can see that a few years ago Wireless N was young and not all routers/adapters supported it well .. these days, running in 54G might actually slow your connection.

But no harm in trying it I suppose.

What I'm saying is that I doubt if this is necessary AT ALL

What should happen - during handshaking your wifi adapter, and the router should negotiate the fastest speed they can both handle automatically, and set themselves accordingly.

What probably prompted that tutorial - In the early days of wireless N, all the manufacturers were releasing products before the wireless N standard was ratified .. all known as "Pre N", a lot of these devices weren't fully compatible, so were slower in "N" mode than in "G" mode .. the above tutorial forces the adapter into "G" mode, the router will follow suite.

So either you have problems .. in which case you should use "G", or you don't in which case let them autonegotiate.

You could always TEST if 54G helps with wireless stability .. run this in a terminal:
Code:
sudo iwconfig ra0 rate 54M

which will set your adapter to wireless G (54mb/s)

now see if things are more stable

a reboot will clear that .. but if it works, you can always make it permanent.

You're not loosing much, according to iwconfig autonegotiation was only selecting 58.5M anyway ;)

testing as I type... ;~)

Edit slowdown and lock-up persists, Mozilla Seamonkey is having issues with something... can't quite pin down what / how to recreate... or whether its merely a factor of my CPU getting overwhelmed... inxi -F:
