I tried installing wicd in Peppermint 4 this morning and it wouldn't start .. after a lot of Googling there seems to be a lot of it about :o
(not just Peppermint, but Ubuntu, Mint, Debian, and other distros too)

If after installing wicd you get prompted for a password with this message:-

Wicd needs to access your computer's network cards

Then after entering your password you get an error stating:-

Could not connect to wicd's D-Bus interface
(and it wants you to check the error log)

Try this ..

Open a terminal and run:
Code:
sudo mv -v /etc/resolv.conf /etc/resolv.conf.backup

then
Code:
sudo ln -s /run/resolvconf/resolv.conf /etc/resolv.conf

then
Code:
sudo rm -v /var/lib/wicd/resolv.conf.orig

then
Code:
sudo service wicd start

Now see if "Wicd Network Manager" will start from your menus.
(menu>Internet>Wicd Network Manager)

The above should work for any Ubuntu based OS .. can't say for other distros.

[hr]

To undo -

run:
Code:
sudo mv -v /etc/resolv.conf /etc/resolv.conf.broken

then
Code:
sudo mv -v /etc/resolv.conf.backup /etc/resolv.conf

BTW, for the sake of conversation...

I just upgraded my Asus Eee Pc 1000HD netbook & Dell Latitude D620 laptop to Peppermint 4.

The Asus Eee PC went without a hitch, but the Dell D620 didn't like NM (network-manager).

Every time I booted the D620 my WiFi AP was listed as a hidden network (which it isn't) in NM. Plus, I had re-entry the WiFi password every I rebooted, even though it was saved in the connection config.

This is a known bug (never has been patched): https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... bug/854833

WiCD always works a treat! Never had it fail once. I'm just too lazy to install it on all of my machines. If NM works, I use it. When it doesn't -- WiCD comes to the rescue.

Anyway, thanks again. You saved me a lot of searching... ;)

Er... one last thing, then I'll stop. :ugeek:

I've installed WiCD on many, many, machines.

For anyone who wants to try the most excellent WiCD network manager (and hasn't gone though the process before) -- you can only run one network manager at a time, e.g. do not run NM & WiCD at the same time.

What I do is download the WiCD deb in advance, remove NM, install WiCD, then reboot/restart.

If you don't like WiCD, and want to switch back to NM (gak), just do the opposite.

You've been warned. LoL!

Personally I've never had a problem with NetworkManager .. but yeah, wicd is there if necessary :)

Had to share this with you...

I just removed NM from GS 3.9.91 Staging, and installed WiCD (Ubu dev branch box).

Code:
vindsl@Zuul:~$ apt-cache policy gnome-shell:
  Installed: 3.9.91+git20130905.2980515c-0ubuntu1~13.10~ricotz0
  Candidate: 3.9.91+git20130905.2980515c-0ubuntu1~13.10~ricotz0

vindsl@Zuul:~$ apt-cache policy network-manager
network-manager:
  Installed: (none)
  Candidate: 0.9.8.2-0ubuntu1~saucy2

vindsl@Zuul:~$ apt-cache policy wicd
wicd:
  Installed: 1.7.2.4-4.1
  Candidate: 1.7.2.4-4.1

After spending an hour coddling WiCD -- and finally getting it to start -- I decided to kick back and surf the web.

I forgot about this thread. Man, could I have used it an hour ago!?!?!

After a lot of trial n' error, I ended up doing exactly what you listed above -- and in the same order. LoL!

Bookmarked (this time)... ;)

Must be one of those subjects that just doesn't stick in the mind because until you brought it up I'd forgot it too :)

And, the saga continues...

Peppermint 4 OS / WiCD / Linux 3.10.x was working great, until I went on this mission-critical business trip, of course.

WiFi connected to every WAP I ran across, over the last 1000 miles, except the AT&T setup in this 4-star hotel. LoL!

I've been stuck with a hard-wire connection, the past three days, in San Antonio, Texas. None of the WAPs in this place will connect.

Linux 3.08.x & 3.10.x were non-starters. I tried everything in my bag of tricks to no avail... until this morning.

On a lark, I decided to throw caution to the wind, and install Linux 3.12-rc3. Guess what -- it works.

I've had a solid connection on every WAP in this hotel -- multiple rooms / floors / meeting halls -- haven't had one failure all day.

Might mention, also... Peppermint 4 OS (64 bit) is flying like the wind. Haven't had one hiccup yet, in any app I've tried.

Nice debug script!

Didn't realize lm-sensors wasn't configured on this Dell.

Code:
Sensors:   System Temperatures: cpu: 66.0C mobo: N/A
Fan Speeds (in rpm): cpu: N/A

Onward and upward...

I must take the time to read the changelog for 3.12 ... a few people have reported it's helped with various issues :)
