This is not really important, it just something I noticed. I have SpiderOak as my cloud backup service. I noticed something I cannot figure out. When I boot up the computer, SpiderOak connects as it is supposed to do and does its thing. The activity icon that is supposed to be up in right hand side of the panel doesn't load. If I log out and log in the icon shows up. I've tried commenting out my Conky autostart because I thought the timings were wrong. That made no difference. Has anyone else noticed this.? It beats me why it is doing this. Is it a Peppermint bug or a SpiderOak bug?

Probably a timing issue where it's getting autostarted before the desktop is properly loaded.

Adding a delay will fix it but this can be VERY awkward with some of these things as normally you'd add the delay in their .desktop file .. problem is dropbox and Copy.com overwrites the .desktop file every time it's run, so you loose the delay after the first boot.

Before going down that route, have you tried purging the app, then reinstalling ?

And can you link to where you got it from, and any instructions you followed to install ?

Yeah, I was thinking the same. Its no problem uninstalling SpiderOak, its packaged as a Deb. I'll uninstall it from there and then manually remove /usr/bin/SpiderOak. I've done it before with Crunchbang after flashing a Clonezilla image to the disk. I think that'll fix it. The SpiderOak link with the downloads and faqs is: SpiderOak Downloads.

OK, good luck with your purge/reinstall, and let me know how it goes .. if it doesn't fix it, I'll install it and try to figure out how best to add a delay.

Well that didn't make a blind bit of difference - never mind :( . I thought I'd try another test. I turned off the SpiderOak autostart at startup and rebooted the machine. After the desktop and Conky had loaded, I manually started SpiderOak. The activity icon appeared in the panel as it should. It has to be a timing problem. As I said, its not a issue as SpiderOak works just fine. Its a resource hungry beast at startup though. I was just curious.

Has starting it manually re-enabled the autostart feature ?

if not it should be an easy fix.

Do you want me to look into it ?

[EDIT]

Actually testing it at the moment might be a bit difficult .. no mattter which link I press on their website it stays on the homepage .. it won't let me at the downloads :roll:

The auto startup remains turned off after a reboot. The autostart feature is turned off from SpiderOak's own preferences.

I could do with taking a look at it, but their website appears to be broken and won't let me at the downloads.

are you able to browse their site at the moments ?

if so, can you provide a link to the i386.deb file.

[EDIT]

Do you know the command to start spideroak from the command line ?

Yeah, their downloads are down for maintenance. Here is a dirrect link to the i386.deb: SpiderOak i386.deb. There is no p/w and the room number is 1234 if asked. ;)

OK thy're back up, and I've figured it out :)

First in Spideroak preferences make SURE "Launch Spideroak at OS startup" is NOT selected and click "OK".
(and never enable that option or you may end up with spideroak running twice)

Now open a terminal and run:
Code:
gedit ~/.config/autostart/spideroak-custom-autostart.desktop

When a BLANK file opens make it read
Code:
[Desktop Entry]
Version=1.0
Type=Application
Name=SpiderOak Custom Autostart
GenericName=File Backup and Synchronizer
Comment=Privately sync, backup, and share your data across your computers.
Comment[en_US]=Privately sync, backup, and share your data across your computers.
Icon=SpiderOak
Exec=bash -c "sleep 10 ; SpiderOak"
Terminal=false
Categories=Network;Archiving;Utility;

SAVE the file.

Log off and on again to test .. spideroak should start 10 seconds after the desktop

if you want to, you can adjust the "sleep 10" in that file to adjust the delay.
