Installed VirtualBox on P4. When I try to start a machine I get the following error:

Quote:
Kernel driver not installed (rc=-1908)

The VirtualBox Linux kernel driver (vboxdrv) is either not loaded or there is a permission problem with /dev/vboxdrv. Please reinstall the kernel module by executing

'/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup'

as root. If it is available in your distribution, you should install the DKMS package first. This package keeps track of Linux kernel changes and recompiles the vboxdrv kernel module if necessary.

The vboxdrv setup file doesn't appear to be there.
What am I missing?

Output from inxi -F

Try this...

Uninstall VirtualBox .. then run:
Code:
sudo apt-get install linux-headers-generic build-essential dkms

now reinstall VirtualBox

That did it. :)
If you wouldn't mind, please explain what that did and how you knew what to do. I'm always impressed with your knowledge and quick helpful replies. If you could help me wrap my head around this, I'd appreciate it.

What give away my secrets .. N-E-V-E-R

Only kiddin ...

vboxdrv needs to be specifically built (compiled) for your kernel version .. the kernel headers (linux-headers-generic) provide the info required to do this .. build-essential contains the packages required for compiling.

and dkms, (which I'm not 100% sure is necessary in this case) allows modules to be automagically rebuilt against new kernels when a kernel update takes place.
(I only included dkms because I seem to remember vboxdrv mentioning something along the lines of " dkms not found" whilst building, but they built anyway ... so I assume it will use dkms if it's found .. so I figured "what the heck" and threw it in ;))

As for "how I knew" .. nothing compares to experience .. I've come across it before ;)

Similar issue, when i try to run virtual box i get this:

WARNING: The character device /dev/vboxdrv does not exist.
Please install the virtualbox-dkms package and the appropriate
headers, most likely linux-headers-generic.

You will not be able to start VMs until this problem is fixed.

I tried the above suggestion but no luck. Uninstalled virtual box then ran

apt-get install linux-headers-generic build-essential dkms

Then reinstalled virtualbox, no luck..

Ok so

helios etc # sudo /etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup
Stopping VirtualBox kernel modules ...done.
Uninstalling old VirtualBox DKMS kernel modules ...done.
Trying to register the VirtualBox kernel modules using DKMSError! echo
Your kernel headers for kernel 3.8.0-34-generic cannot be found at
/lib/modules/3.8.0-34-generic/build or /lib/modules/3.8.0-34-generic/source.
...failed!
(Failed, trying without DKMS)
Recompiling VirtualBox kernel modules ...failed!
(Look at /var/log/vbox-install.log to find out what went wrong)

Problem is that /var/lov/vbox-install.log doesnt exist.

Issue resolved. Uninstalled virtualbox, then ran:

sudo apt-get install linux-headers-$(uname -r)

To update headers. That was the issue. Reinstalled virtualbox and now running an iso no issues :D

I feel proud of myself haha

If linux-headers-generic didn't do it, that means you've installed linux-headers-generic for a newer kernel than you're actually using .. So there's a newer kernel in the repos.
(effectively meaning your loaded kernel version and the version of linux-headers-generic were out of sync .. which is why you had to be more specific about the version)

You could probably do with running a full system update (to pull in the latest kernel) .. then rebooting to load it.
(but up to you ;))
