I just replaced my old Tom Tom GPS with a new one. The new unit comes with "lifetime maps" and I'd like to be able to update the maps on my own desktop computer - I'm running Peppermint 4. The new GPS is a Tom Tom Start 45M. I've researched this topic on the internet, and it seems like Linux users are more or less running into a brick wall on this issue. I downloaded and installed Tom Tom Home using Wine, but the GPS device is not recognized. I guess worst-case scenario is that I use someone else's Mac or Windows machine. Or - God forbid - run Windows alongside my Peppermint OS. Which seems a rather dramatic thing for a faithful Linux user to contemplate, but I drive a taxi cab, and this dedicated GPS has proven to be the greatest thing since sliced bread. Any ideas about this, or is this truly that proverbial instance of "...you can't get there from here?" I rather presume the new GPS has a new maps update pre-loaded. In fact I tested it with a couple of the very newest streets that I could think of off the top of my head. It most-likely doesn't need any immediate updating, but I might as well figure out just what I need to do when the need arises... thanks. MIKE.

Once a year bung XP into a Virtualbox VM (not the OSS version as that doesn't have USB passthrough) .. then remove the VM ;)

That's about the only thing I can think of.

Or cross your fingers that "Darling" gets some heavy development done:

(Kind of WINE for Mac software)

Hmm .. just realised .. that will give us WINE and DINE

Thanks. You might have to explain that one to me. Is this https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads what you're talking about?

Now what? What is this, running XP on your linux machine? I haven't tried anything like this before, I'm a bit lost.

Yeah .. add the virtualbox repository .. install virtualbox .. then follow these instructions to install XP in a VM (virtual machine)
http://www.wikihow.com/Install-Windows- ... VirtualBox

If you want adding the virtualbox repository, and installing VirtualBox .. just ask ;)

You'll need a copy of XP or Win7 though.

OK. Yeah I don't really have a copy of Windows. I had a copy of it with a previous desktop computer, which I sold. Then I had Windows 7 Starter with a netbook that I purchased about 3yrs ago, and then subsequently installed Ubuntu, and then Peppermint, with which I've been pretty happy with for the last couple years. In fact, this seems like the first real "roadblock" I've encountered in my couple/three years of Linux usage. I may still have the Windows 7 Starter license on that netbook, if I went into investigatory mode. Some of the stickers and serial numbers, etc, are probably rubbed off. Also about 1/3 of the screen is crapped-out on that netbook. I just ordered a new model Chromebook which is out on the UPS truck for delivery today. Anyway, for the most part, I've left Windows behind and haven't really looked back.

I talked to my Dad this morning, and they have a newish Apple laptop (64bit, Intel) and they'll be stopping by here in May. I'll update the maps then. Until then, this GPS really should have rather recent maps already installed. It's brand-new and has "lifetime maps." I went two years without updating my previous GPS, which was probably a year or so old when I bought it, but started noticing some gaps in its mapping abilities. (as I said, I drive a cab. So it gets a workout.)

I have some other friends and family with Macs and Windows, I'll just update this new GPS periodically that way. Unless I can find the Windows 7 license on that netbook. But about 1/3 of the screen is crapped out on that netbook, and it might be easier to use someone else's computer for a brief maps update once in a blue moon. I mean I could purchase Windows 8 for like $100, but just for this GPS issue, it seems absurd. And I hate going back. I really hate going back. Thanks for your help. MIKE.
